Great Terminal of Istanbul

“Great Terminal of Istanbul”, publicly known as “Esenler Bus Station”, is the largest bus terminal in Turkey and Europe, the third largest and busiest in the world. Although it has come to attention with many troubles and news since its opening in 1994, “Esenler Bus Station”, has providing bus services to all over the country and to many neighbor countries with 325 bus companies, and is the most important transit point in Turkey where 95% of the passenger transportation is made on highway. The terminal has been especially criticized for its chaotic and ugly architecture. It also has constant bus congestion within itself. A place seems dangerous, complex and dirty for its passengers however it has a life underneath where hope and soul live together; it is more than a bus station which is equivalent to a small county population where tens of thousands of passengers travel each day and where a great chaotic life is experienced, hosts thousands of personnel as well. Like an Istanbul in Istanbul rather than a bus station. This long term photography project is based on a place that maybe will not be longer in a few years, but has many stories inside, reflection of which needs to be left for the future. The pictures are not simply the effort of documenting a disappearing place. I became part of this place, lived the atmosphere, experienced people’s life that are traveling and working there. That is why the pictures reflect the real life at the station.
