Wee Muckders – Youth of Belfast

»If I had been born at the top of my street, behind the corrugated-iron border, I would have been British. Incredible to think. My whole idea of myself, culture, religion, nationalism and politics are all an accident of birth. I was one street away from being born my ‘enemy’«. Belfast-born novelist Paul McVeigh Photographer Toby Binder has been documenting the daily life of teenagers in British working-class communities since 2004. After the Brexit referendum he focussed his work on Belfast in Northern Ireland. There was a serious concern that Brexit will threaten the Peace Agreement of 1998 that ended the armed conflict between Protestant Unionists and Catholic Nationalists who live in homogeneous neighborhoods that are divided by walls till today The violence that erupted again in the streets of Belfast in April 2021, draws attention again to a conflict that has been simmering for years, calmed by economic recovery and wise political decisions, but never resolved. The unresolved issue of the "Irish Sea Border" caused by Brexit certainly plays a role. However, it seems more decisive that once again young people are being instrumentalised by the old generation to achieve their political goals. In doing so, the future of the youth is deliberately put at risk and a long-lasting frustration is exploited. For long before the outbreak of violence, teenagers in Belfast were already struggling with problems and often felt unheard – no matter which side of the wall they live on.
