Purim, B'nei Brak, Israel

Photographed this past March in the Ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of B’nei Brak, this series captures the vibrant celebration of Purim. This Jewish holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jews in ancient Persia from a genocidal plot masterminded by Haman, a high-ranking official. According to the biblical Book of Esther, Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai thwarted Haman's plan, leading to a day of joyous celebration.

Purim is a time of great festivity, marked by customs that transcend the boundaries between secular and nonsecular Jewish communities. One of the most distinctive traditions of Purim is dressing up in costumes, symbolizing the hidden nature of the miracle and the themes of disguise and reversal evident in the Purim story. This practice brings an atmosphere of joy to the streets, as individuals of all ages don colorful and imaginative costumes.

Another unique aspect of Purim is the practice of drinking alcohol. According to the Talmud, it is customary to drink until one "cannot distinguish between ‘cursed is Haman’ and ‘blessed is Mordechai’." This tradition adds to the jubilant and somewhat unruly spirit of the holiday, reflecting the theme of breaking norms and the topsy-turvy nature of the story.

B’nei Brak, with its dense Ultra-Orthodox population, becomes a focal point of Purim festivities. The streets are filled with revelers, from children in playful costumes to adults partaking in the spirited customs. The celebration is a blend of religious observance, community solidarity, and pure joy, making Purim a unique and beloved holiday in the Jewish calendar.
