Hoppe Hoppe Reiter
Racecourses are fascinating places for the rich and famous. Property and share prices are discussed, bets are placed and lots of champagne is drunk. Horses are traded here for millions - always with an eye to winning, at the expense of their health. In recent years, the racehorse industry has faced a lot of criticism over animal welfare, but it is still a well-visited industry.
I have spent the last two summers at various racecourses in Germany talking to the jockeys. Many of them grew up around horses from a young age. Some of them travel up to 70,000 kilometres a year to compete in international races. The fear of injury or weight gain is a constant companion. I follow the question of what motivates jockeys to race horses.
