Ndokette Session

"Ndokette Session" is a multidisciplinary project combining photography, video and performance. It consists of a series of photos accompanied by a short film. It was conceived within the framework of a collective of artists named "Atelier Ndokette" that I represent here. For now, the project is composed by a series of 20 photographs and a video installation. It was simply born out of curiosity for the word "Ndokette" itself. This word and what it determines are part of the Senegalese, West African and even African cultural heritage. Our curiosity was thus nourished in order to understand the origins of the word and the clothing which it indicates. Our research, make us notice an attitude of spectator in front of our socio-cultural phenomena. From there, we wanted to depict the way this word resonate in us. We've tried to observe what surrounds us; our multiple, bold and surprising reality. "Ndokette Session" thus becomes an initiatory quest focused on "personal" and "collective" introspections. Maybe we are just showing people under a very high sun or next to sunsets. We aren't saying that these images have no particular meaning, but the one we want to retain is the idea of bringing people to question themselves, to question their present. Indeed, for a part of the world whose "past" is generally remembered as traumatic or misunderstood; whose "future" is idealized and externalized, we believe that the present deserves more attention. Thus, we chose to represent people, in a certain geographical area at a specific time, going through different stages of life. That's why we used concepts related to rituals. We recall the rhythms brought by rituals and "central" events as a way of living. By putting life in perspective, "Ndokette Session" aims to put a question mark on beliefs and feelings. It's also a call to master again the imaginary. Not to dream it, nor to fetishize it, nor to consume it, but to live it fully, to produce it, to embrace it and be one with.
