In Donald's Service
This story, which was published in stern, is part of a bigger body of work that I have been producing this year, focusing on Trump supporters in the US and exploring how people present themselves to express identity and create a sense of belonging.
Gary Brockney, 78, and Lucy Brockney, 69, have been voting for Trump since the 2016 election. From Bill Clinton to George W. Bush to Donald Trump, the former Democrat couple living in Wolfeboro, NH, is now Republican.
Translated excerpt:
In 2020, Trump won Wolfeboro by just 16 votes. In the past, working class people here voted Democrat and the wealthy voted Republican. Now, it is the other way around. “People can no longer afford a haircut because of inflation,” Gary said. “I had to raise my prices too. 25 years ago, I started with seven dollars. Then I had to go to eight. Now ten.”
“I think about Trump every second of the day,” he said. “I wake up with him and go to bed with him.”
