Mom without Child

Ever since she can remember, a child has been Nadine's greatest wish. But because she and her husband Michael are both short-statured, there is a risk that the short stature will be inherited twice. These children are not viable. The probability: 25 percent. A number that no longer means anything to Nadine. She became pregnant three times and gave birth to three sons. All three died immediately after birth. “Mom without a child” that's what Nadine called herself. The 27-year-old fashion designer blogged about her longing for a child, her pain, the loss, her grief – and the feeling of being alone with it. Again and again, Nadine was commented with reproaches, and online people “accused” her why she took the risk of giving birth to children who were not viable. Having a child, it seems, is the most normal thing in the world. Humans are made to reproduce. If a young couple does not succeed, the world often collapses on them. Adoption or artificial insemination are pushed up a mountain of bureaucratic hurdles. What others receive as a gift becomes a burden for others. But Nadine did not give up. With the help of artificial insemination, her husband and she were able to exclude the double inheritance of small stature beforehand. For this, the two had to apply pre-implantation diagnostics to the ethics committee. In July 2021, she arrived at the clinic in labor. Nadine felt scared. That moment reminded her of the other births. Many contractions that did nothing, for hours and days. Memories of leaving her other babies in the hospital came to her. What if something goes wrong? But Jonnes is alive. He's healthy and likely to surpass his parents in a few years. After three star babies, a healthy rainbow baby: that's what mothers call their child who is born alive after a miscarriage or stillbirth. A term that stands for hope. For the fact that wishes can come true.
