REYLUSKA & REYNUSK
What can a sister mean to someone? For years I searched for an answer to that question. A sister is an example, friend and sparring buddy. She is ‘cut from the same cloth’. With her you can argue, cry and laugh. She is always there for you. It is someone who helps you explore yourself and the world and gives you the unconditional love, trust and security you need to become a woman. A sister who could do that had to be a bliss. And then I ran into Reyluska and Reynuska.
REYLUSKA & REYNUSKA is a series about the sisterly bond between the adolescent twins Reyluska(16) and Reynuska(16). I got to know them as neighbours during my stay on Bandabou, the quiet side of the island of Curacao in the summer of 2022. I was captivated by the intimate bond between the sisters. A bond that touched on my own desire for sisterly love. In them I saw the power of each other's support during an important and formative period in life.
The focus in this work is on the sister bond, the transition from young girls to (young) adults and the associated playfulness, intimacy and boredom. The setting is a matriarchal society in which women have been valued for centuries for their strength, resilience and resourcefulness and in which their contribution to society is celebrated.
