Zanan- under the Islamic republic
“Zanan” a persian word meaning women is a long-term project of 8 years about documenting the experience of being a modern woman in Tehran. The goal of this story is to show what it feels like to be a woman in Iran’s today. “Zanan” seek to highlight cultural similarities and share the sound of life from a gender equality point of view. As a woman being born and raised in Iran, I noticed that there is a big difference between the reality of the lives of the Iranian people and that which the Iranian government portrait and would wish the world to see; This project explores the lives of women that grew up in the same world as I did. Modern women who have consistently resisted against discrimination; and sometimes are conflicted between observing old traditions and following modern values. Although, profound changes that took place in Iran as a result of the Islamic revolution in 1979, had a significant impact in limiting women and their civil rights; Ironically, during the four decades after the revolution, women also have made significant gains in their rights to an education. Currently more than 60 percent of Iranian university’s intake are women; a fact that empowers them in shaking the existing roots of Sexism. During Green movement in 2009 and new wave of demonstrations in the country since 2017, women were at the forefront. The Compulsory veiling were protested largely through peaceful campaigns and avoiding to observe hijab in public, video record those moments and sharing them on social media. Iran now faces young women who have found the courage to express their demands and pushing boundaries in different ways despite the fact that many objections face a backlash from the patriarchal powers of both family and society.
