We Were Longing to Fly, But Not Too Far

The ongoing war in Ukraine is affecting the Baltic countries on a deep existential level – it brings unprocessed trauma to the surface, triggering questions about freedom and collective identity. After more than three decades of independence, the Baltic states present a complex picture – they are rapidly evolving, and deeply aligned with contemporary European ideals, while simultaneously grappling with the legacy of a painful past.

This legacy encompasses the systematic repression imposed by the Soviet Union, including mass deportations to Siberia, arrests, executions, censorship, as well as severe economic, demographic, and political setbacks. Alongside the history of suffering, there is a narrative of resilience built upon resistance, the clandestine preservation of rituals and traditions, and a profound connection to nature.

The project delves into the experiences of individuals spanning different generations, revealing an emotional tapestry of hope, despair, and introspection. It unfolds within their homes and the solace of the Baltic landscape, exploring how their identities have endured and evolved despite imposed restrictions.

The title of the work, “We Were Longing To Fly, But Not Too Far,” draws inspiration from the history of gliding in Lithuania, banned during the Soviet occupation. This symbolizes the delicate balance in the healing process, where the desire to get better meets the fear of facing emotional wounds. It emphasizes the ambivalent and gradual nature of transformation, one that demands both time and courage to patiently navigate its course.

The project is a collaboration of the photographers Carlo Lombardi and Miriam Stanke.
