Funky Portrait Project

Funky portraits are staged portraits of families, friends and couples that celebrate the relationships they portray. They are a joyful party of the loving essence of each of the portrayed relationships.

The portraits are a mutual effort of both the photographed subjects and myself as the photographer to dig into this joyful essence of each relationship.
In order for me as the author of the portrait, to find out what is special about the relationship of a family or group of friends, they themselves must first become aware of the beauties and nuances of their relationship, talk and agree about them in between each other, and then verbalize and convey them so that I can understand and fell them. This is followed by my interpretation of these stories, elaboration of the photo "scenario", sketches, preparation and the actual photo shoot. Each of these parts of the process is in close cooperation and agreement with the main actors of the portrait.

The directed and staged aspect of Funky Portraits, preassigned roles and places in the composition are always for the purpose of the story that I want to tell together with my subjects. All photos are full of details and symbols, personal items, important locations, actors' gestures that are carefully staged and placed to give a layered reading to the scene. These photos always speak more to those who understand all their little parts and details, and these are first of all the heroes of the Funky portraits themselves, but I believe truly that they also convey to other observers the joy of living that they recognize and with which they can identify themselves as well.

This project started as individual commissioned portraits. First one I made in 2012.
Over the years it is slowly becoming a collection, and an, in a way unintentional art project.
These photos show a maybe even naive, sugar coated reality of our relationships, but a reality I, and the people I portray, choose to put more spotlight on, and too celebrate it with these works. They become like family altars of memory and celebration of love, friendship and joy.

I believe, that through these portraits we nurture our relationships and let our loved ones know how important they are to us, while also having a good time making them, additionally bonding and understanding each other, making new memories, retelling and interpreting old ones.
