Women of the Sea - Salt & Life
“Salt & Life” series represents a three-year commitment to documenting the work of these women of the sea. Mathieu Ménard carried out a great deal of research, gradually forging links with them, and set off to meet them in the four corners of Brittany. His work bears witness to these women's passion for their profession, and the richness and complexity of their working lives.
Whether they're fisherwomen or carpenters, lifeguards or oyster farmers, ocean-going captains or skippers, they sail beyond conventional clichés. Each brings her own particular sensibility to it, and maintains an intimate relationship with the sea.
In exploring these maritime lives, Mathieu Ménard aims to highlight women in all their diversity and uniqueness. In his eyes, the sea has no gender, but offers a myriad of human adventures.
