Letters to Gemma

Gemma left home for a job interview, and never returned. This project is an immersion to her world, documenting the places she once inhabited and the people closest to her. The poetry that she wrote, the flowers she grew, and the sad memory of her desire to live. Trough this series I portrait myself as a interpretation and personification of the intimate world of Gemma Mavil, a victim of enforced disappearance since 2011. By establishing a relationship of respect, empathy with Gemma’s parents, I try to be able to ‘know’ Gemma and connect with her. This photographic essay is an immersion into Gemma’s world, suspended in time as her live was suspended the moment she was taken away. By telling the story of Gemma and her family, I call attention on the unbearable pain that thousands of people are going through in Mexico, pointing out that the growing numbers in victims databases are more than figures, they are all individuals with life stories stolen from their families. According to Federal database on missing persons, in Mexico someone disappears every two hours.
