When Joban Singh took his life in mid 2020, Italian media drew their attention once again on a community of Punjabi working in unbearable conditions in the fields of Latina, one hour south of Rome. But what media labelled as yet another case of a migrant exploited was in fact a victim of trafficking, trapped by a criminal network of travel agents, middlemen, complicit community leaders and corrupted officials operating between Punjab (India) and Italy. Pressure on young Punjabis to migrate is strong - and is growing even stronger as a result of the post-pandemic economic crisis. Italy is a popular option for those who cannot afford the Canada, Australia,UK or the USA but local agents are just a small part of a much bigger network that Punjabi authorities have little interest in cracking. The same happens in Italy, as the economic interests in Latina’s area are huge: the vegetables harvested in this area are exported all over Europe.
