Vanessa Rocca, a friend of mine, is from Sant Carles de la Rapita, a small Catalan port town located right on the Ebro Delta. As a child, she was often sent to the butcher by her parents. From the Franco dictatorship there was a traditional saying at that time: when Vanessa entered the store she had to say: "Ave Maria" ("Holy Mary"), the butcher came out of the back room, saw the little girl and answered: "Sin pecado concebida", which means: "Conceived without sins". Then she placed the order and the butcher chopped the meat. This photographic essay follows the Río Ebro, starting from its source at 1800 m altitude in the Cantabrian Mountains to its mouth in the Ebro Delta. The absurdities that arise due to extreme living conditions and contradictory climate policies are thematized. Along both fairytale and industrial landscapes, small villages and big cities, stories of the river as well as from the lives of the people who live along and with it are documented with the medium format camera. The project was created with the help of a research grant from VG-Bildkunst and will be continued.
