Capital Daughters

"Capital Daughters" is a long-term photography project in which I have been portraying the Berlin women since 2023. The work is intended as a contemporary exploration of the lived realities of women in my generation—women born in the 1990s and raised in a freshly reunified Berlin, shaped by change, freedom, and contradictions.

At its core, the project envisions a matriarchal utopia: a city where women move freely beyond patriarchal structures and actively shape the urban landscape. The series is a deliberate counterpoint to a patriarchal visual order and makes female presence visible as a self-determined, collective force in public space.

The Berlin woman is hard to define. She is courageous and delicate, ironic and rebellious. Her story has always been one of emancipation. My work continues this thread and explores the female presence in private and public spaces. Bedrooms, streets, and in-between spaces become stages for intimacy and resistance. Women's stories are hidden everywhere in the city's nooks and crannies, making it possible to experience how identity and belonging emerge in urban spaces.

The portrayed women are sisters, partners, friends, and mothers. All part of a female network in which community becomes a sense of home. Each portrait becomes an encounter—with my generation, with Berlin, and with my own biography as a daughter of this city.

"Capital Daughters" combines poetry with political stance. It is an attempt to create a new visual narrative of the city of Berlin—one in which women not only appear but define. A utopia that is already becoming reality.
