Sorbs: from ritual to rave
Can tradition survive change? In Lusatia, home to the Sorbs—a Slavic minority in Germany—this question plays out as tradition meets modern life. How do you hold onto your roots while moving forward?
This project highlights young Sorbs, whose voices are often overlooked. While a lot of focus is on older traditions, many of them are patriarchal and conventional and don’t work in modern world. This creates tension and conflict within the community. Through feminist rap, underground hip-hop, and bold fashion, young Sorbs push boundaries while staying connected to their heritage.
With only 70,000 Sorbian speakers left, their story is part of a bigger struggle: keeping a culture alive while adapting to change. As someone with a migrant background, I understand what it’s like to exist between two worlds, navigating identity and belonging.
