Hey Sailor! New in Town?
I turned a lifelong love into an immersive documentary project, spending the last decade traveling around North America, on land and at sea, chasing sailors. I reverse the male gaze and photograph at an intimate distance as I make these full-grown men and heroes nervous. I entered this strange world of American patriotism, hyper masculinity and bravado as a judgmental outsider, I transformed into a friend, lover and insider. In the tradition of street photography, I am on the hunt for salty tales and shenanigans as nostalgia, cliché, and humour guide the viewer through my adventures.
As a Canadian I have always been fascinated by the hyperbolic patriotism of America, the kitsch and the excess of flags and uniformed military that fill the streets.
The pandemic briefly ended my practice and the hedonistic adventures of Sailors on leave, sinister in the excess of booze, sexuality, toxic masculinity and youthful bravado. I am part of the story, I will again put on my bright red lipstick, slip on my bright red high heels, I will see my Sailors on the streets of New York and other great American cities, I will see these boys in white and with giddy excitement I will again approach… “Hey Sailor! New in town?”
