Fantastic animals
and how to pet them

I grew up in the remote Polish countryside in a small villageand as a child, I was constantly surrounded by animals. At home, we had 5 cats and 2 dogs, in the backyard we had geese and chickens. In the neighborhood were a lot of cows, chickens, and pigs. Year by year it started to disappear. Now my parents have two cats and a dog. I haven’t seen a cow in the area for years. I’ve started wondering what happened and how the relationship with animals has changed and how it is now. I’ve noticed the tendency of adopting and buying these non-standard, unusual animals and started to photograph them.
The relationship between a man and animal has been shaped by the history of civilization, culture and religion. The current situation of many species is dramatic yet the sentimental view on nature, its qualities: with representations of animals of power being used as a sign of spiritual or strictly economical status is rising. Therefore I can see an interesting context of keeping an exotic animal at home. The question arises: who is the main subject? The domination, cultural and
economical capital, love for nature? For me it's animals and their possibility to take over.
