"It's easier to sing in a choir" - „Im Chor lässt’s sich leichter singen“ documents the process of setting up group portraits in moving images. Freemasons, scouts, student fraternities - closed societies have always held a great fascination for me. My visual works deal with norms, the individuality of a person within a group and group identities. A special approach to these themes is filming the setting up of group portraits. A group portrait in the classical photographic sense is a snapshot, a moment in a process that has been frozen. But a group portrait could reveal so much more... For this reason, I decided not only to take a perfect group picture, but to film the setting up of the portrait from beginning to end. In a kind of "moving image" I gain exciting insights into dynamics, hierarchies, homogeneity, dress code and rules within a group. So far, there are five group portraits (see Vimeo compilation) and it is already becoming visible how differently the individual groups act and function. During the next months, I would like to film more group portraits so that in the end there are about 20 different portraits that can be shown side by side in an exhibition.
