Power of Desire
Power of Desire is a project on gender and sexuality in Brazil during the years 2015 and 2017. Coming from a country like Kosovo where the topic of LGBTQI is still a taboo - even though it has a law that allows equal marriage from the beginning of the countries Independence which happened in 2008. Through this project I tried questioning the binary male / female schemes by which gender, sexuality and identity processes have been understood up to a few years ago; schemes that the current political-social scenario seeks to reinforce, ignoring the macro and micropolitical struggle of sexual dissidence under the title of a new era. From a documentary photography perspective, I documented the Drag scene in Rio de Janeiro, the LGBT community in Rio and São Paulo, but also the cisgender sociability in moments like carnival, which is understood as a scenario of disruptions, as a popular festival that breaks with the socio-urban codification. The project portrays both the nocturnal universe of these two big cities, the parties, the preparation of the Drag, LGBT couples as well as intimate scenes, understanding both as moments of liberation and empowerment. I wanted to portray the freedom of bodies and the power of desire.
