The last transhumance

Transhumance, the ancient practice of moving cattle from summer to winter pastures, in Central-Southern Italy is closely connected to the network of “tratturi", the ancient streets furrowed by the millennial passage of flocks and herds. The recognition of this practice as an intangible asset of humanity by UNESCO in 2019 is largely due to the last custodians of this tradition, the Colantuono family. Every year in the month of May the spectacular passage of a herd of three hundred cattle and the caravan in tow along the tratturi network repeats, exactly as it happened for centuries. Today, however, few are the parts of these ancient paths that resist destruction and divestment by national and regional entities. The construction of roads, wind farms and gas pipelines has now reduced to the bone the points where it is possible to observe the tratturi in all their majesty. The sheep tracks in fact can reach the width of 111 meters. In the framework of the overall action of rediscovery and valorisation undertaken in this territory, the protection of these "green giants" could represent the flywheel for the entire area through sustainable tourism - thus contributing to the rebirth of places in Italy often considered "minor", whose landscape and gastronomic treasures are closely linked to transhumance.
