A New Beginning
y first project for your review involves two refugee Afghan families that arrived in Chile in October 2021. Once in Santiago, the capital, they were temporarily settled in a house of Jesuits in Padre Hurtado, on the outskirts of the city, until a couple of months ago when they got a provisional visa for eight months that will be automatically renewed. Now each family has its own apartment and the real challenge has begun: they will have to learn Spanish, find a job and be financially independent. This is a long-term project. I intend to continue documenting these families' lives, and particularly one of their children, for the foreseeable future. I want to explore the kid's transition to adolescence while facing, at the same time, all the challenges an insertion into a new society and culture involves. I see Tamkin, Ashinat, and Mahas play in the yard, chasing each other and bursting into laughter, hopefully leaving behind all the violence, horror, and fear they lived through their last days in Kabul. After crossing the world to start a new life away from the brutal Taliban regime, today these families dream of a new beginning.
