"Blood and Faith: Muharram's Living Legacy in Iran" For over a decade, I have documented Muharram's rituals across Iran—where the seventh-century martyrdom of Imam Hussain (pbuh) at Karbala erupts into visceral, living theater. Shia communities transform grief into a language of resistance: men beat their chests in synchronized mourning, Nakhl coffins sway through crowds like ships in a storm, and children cradle alams etched with Hussain's name. This work traces how a 1, 400-year-old story survives not as history, but as a framework for contemporary struggle. In Iran, where political and spiritual dissent often merge, Muharram's symbols—blood, chains, and the awaited return of Imam Mahdi—become metaphors for resilience. Through intimate access, I reveal the paradox of these rituals: their violence is devotional, their sorrow defiant. The series asks what it means to mourn a death so ancient it feels present, and to weaponize memory against modern oppression.
