The rebellion of the canes: the struggle of retirees in Argentina

Every Wednesday at 3 pm, retirees gather at Congress, always under the repressive gaze of the police. "How ugly, how ugly, how ugly it must be, to hit a pensioner to be able to eat," they sing.

Retirees are not afraid of batons, gas or rubber bullets. There is talk of a lack of medicines and a lot of hunger. The government of far-right Javier Milei has declared war on the elderly.

Today, in Argentina, 35.7% of retirees are poor. Although the increase in poverty in this population sector occurred constantly during the last governments, there was a huge jump during Milei's administration.

2024 takes with it the blood from the wounds of the retirees due to the impact of the batons; tears from the pepper spray, but also her cry of rebellion. The concentration outside Congress is not new. Is has never stopped happening since 1992. But this time there is something different... A reality that not even the most official media could cover or justify, and that has exposed the passivity of the most traditional parties.

Every Wednesday photojournalists blend in among the hundreds of posters that dismantle Milei's image, the walkers and canes—defensive companions—and the flags and handkerchiefs. A connection is created between them and us. There is no shortage of hugs and kisses, because the faces are already known. Questions are heard about their grandchildren, stories of past revolutions and aspirations that were never completed.

If retirees in Argentina have taught us anything is that their fight is everyone's fight. We are all going to be retirees, it is just a matter of time.
