The Forgotten War

Jenin refugee camp is known for its strong presence of militant fighters where militia groups have formed, primarily the Islamic Jihad. The camp has become a symbol of Palestinian resistance in the West Bank. I began photographing in Jenin refugee camp in November of 2023, after the October 7th attacks. Over the last 18 months of war in Gaza, military operations have escalated to record highs in the refugee camps in the north of the West Bank, especially Jenin. The first images I took in camp was the aftermath of a large raid by the Israeli Defense Force, where they were targeting militants. In the attacks, several civilians were killed and homes destroyed, where I spoke and photographed affected families. In 2024, I spent weeks gaining access and trust, eventually photographing with militant fighters from the camp. The camp had just experienced a 10-day raid from the IDF, with heavy clashes from fighters, with drone and airstrikes causing more displacement in the camp. However, currently Jenin refugee camp has been complete occupied by IDF forces, where mass demolitions are taking place and over 40,000 people have been displaced. This is the greatest displacement the West Bank has seen since the Arab – Israeli War of 1967.

The images of this project show the realities of living in Jenin, portraying images of homes destroyed, militant fighters, people injured, and residents mourning the loss of loved ones. Palestinians from Jenin refugee camp have recently been completely displaced from their homes, currently unable to return to the camp. People find themselves living in mosques, community centers outside the camp and throughout the West Bank, as they wait to see when they can return home. The IDF is conducting large scale demolitions throughout the camp currently and and images are a glimpse of what life was like in the camp before it was completely occupied and it's residents displaced.
