Evangelical rising in Venezuela

Since 2023, I have been documenting the evangelical Christian community in Caracas, highlighting their daily lives, religious practices, and role in society. Through images of worship services, baptisms, and social work, the project shows how these churches provide crucial support in vulnerable communities during the ongoing national crisis.

Evangelical churches use social work as a means to expand their message, attracting new members. They are now present in nearly every city, town and neighborhood across the country. While they don’t represent the majority religion (less than 20% of religiously affiliated), their growing influence in public life has sparked both support and concern. National political figures have engaged with some evangelical leaders, financing their activities and integrating them into state-run social programs.

Some pastors fear their activities could be exploited politically. Human rights defenders have also raised concerns about discriminatory discourses in public debates on issues like gender equality and sexual education.

This photography project aims to provide a closer view of this community’s role in Venezuela, from my view as a former member of the evangelical church.
