SeelSorge - faith and religion in a german prison

A prison is a place where people from different backgrounds, social backgrounds and thoughts come together because they have committed acts that social conventions declare wrong. Imprisonment has an effect on people. The imprisoned have a lot of time to think about themselves and their deeds. The loss of freedom and being alone without their loved ones leads the imprisoned to look for support. They often find this in faith and religion. In prison, there is an enormous influx of religion. Christian and, increasingly, Muslim chaplains offer the inmates recreational activities, discussion groups and individual support. Axel Wiesbrock is one of two chaplains at Heidering Prison in Berlin. The Prison is the most modern prison in the Berlin district. It exists since 2013. The facility has 647 prison places for adult male inmates. I accompanied Axel Wiesbrock in his work for a few months in 2020.
