Feeble Bloom

Feeble Bloom explores the role of Festival Queens in the Philippines, young women chosen to represent their communities during religious and cultural festivals. These girls, often coming from humble family backgrounds and facing economic hardships, find in the role of Queen a valuable opportunity for social advancement and to embody a collective identity. In a country marked by deep social inequalities and limited access to resources, the role of Festival Queen becomes a public recognition, a chance to build self-confidence, and a way to express the pride of their community.
The contrast between the grandness of the celebrations and the everyday reality of the girls, who often live in poverty or marginalized rural areas, makes this tradition a powerful symbol of aspiration and hope. While the Festival Queens embody an ideal of beauty and grace, behind them lies a reality of family sacrifices, long hours of preparation, and strong collective support involving entire families and communities. This link between cultural tradition and contemporary social dynamics makes Feeble Bloom a story that aims to explore the balance between cultural heritage and the desire for emancipation.

While the Philippines has made progress in gender equality rankings, women in rural areas continue to face severe disadvantages. Many earn just 43% of what rural men make, with limited access to healthcare, education, and social protection. They perform long hours of unpaid care work, often more than 13 hours daily, and are more vulnerable to gender-based violence, climate disasters, and displacement. Despite improvements at the national level, the realities for rural women remain marked by inequality and exclusion.
Through this project, I want to show how these young women interpret a traditional symbol to create new opportunities for personal and social growth, offering a perspective on the female identity in today’s Philippines.
