It is a long-term personal project started in 2016 about the author’s reconnection with Buryat culture. Buryats are indigenous people of Siberia, who have tight cultural and historical connections with Mongolians. Buryat-Mongolian people live in several regions of Siberian Russia including Republic of Buryatia which is among the poorest regions of Russia. Despite centuries of imperial and Soviet colonialism,
the Buryat people managed to preserve their spiritual culture. Buddhism, shamanism as well as animism
create a system of rules, traditions, rituals and events that frame life in Buryat villages and the city. By filming rituals and daily life the author tries to integrate herself into this system. Being an ethnic Buryat, but growing far from her homeland, the author has to reacquaint herself with the culture. At the same time, the author avoids the gaze of the Other, the gaze of the Stranger, that is why in her work she concentrates not on the external side of rituals and traditions, but rather captures the emotional experiences and revisits images from childhood memories.
