The latest report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) reveals that not only girls and women, but also boys are suffering significantly under the Taliban’s restrictive education policies in Afghanistan. Titled “Schools are Failing Boys Too,” the 19-page report outlines the negative impact of Taliban rule on boys’ education since their takeover in August 2021.

HRW documents that the dismissal of all female teachers from boys’ schools has led to a severe shortage of qualified teaching staff. In many cases, classes are no longer held at all or are taught by underqualified instructors. At the same time, the use of corporal punishment has increased, with students sometimes being publicly beaten for minor infractions. Furthermore, key subjects such as art, sports, English, and civic education have been removed from the curriculum, further reducing the quality of education.

These measures have instilled fear among many students and led to a decline in school attendance. Young people are increasingly losing hope for a better future. The situation is worsened by the economic hardship many families face, forcing numerous boys to drop out of school to help support their households. At the same time, there is a lack of adequate psychological support, leading to a rise in anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

Although boys are not officially banned from attending secondary school, the Taliban’s policies are effectively undermining their right to education and violating Afghanistan’s international obligations. HRW calls on the international community and UN agencies to pressure the Taliban to end their discriminatory practices and restore the right to safe and quality education for all children.
