Each year in Spain, approximately 300,000 dogs and cats are abandoned, highlighting the vulnerability of domestic animals and the urgent need to promote awareness about respect and responsibility toward them. Various organizations dedicate their efforts to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming these animals, giving them a second chance in committed and caring homes.

"Unconditional" is a photographic project that seeks to document the emotional and social impact of adopting animals who have suffered abandonment and abuse. Through a compelling visual narrative, it explores the transformation process experienced by both the rescued animals and the families who welcome them, emphasizing love as the core element of this relationship and its connection to values such as responsibility, commitment, and mutual respect.

To develop this work, I have begun field research at Fundación Salvando Peludos, a key organization in Spain’s animal rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Their work is comprehensive: they operate as a shelter, ethically and responsibly managing cases referred by local authorities and institutions. Additionally, they serve as a sanctuary for farmed animals, following a philosophy of species equality, environmental care, and the protection of all living beings.

Over the past 12 years, they have conducted more than 30,000 rescues and have played a significant role in educational efforts to raise awareness about animal rights and combat mistreatment.

Through documentary photography, this project seeks not only to shed light on the complex reality of animal abandonment and rehabilitation but also to encourage critical reflection on the human-animal relationship. It aims to inspire empathy and promote a model of coexistence based on respect and compassion. The goal is to create a body of work that, from an artistic and testimonial perspective, contributes to the broader discourse on animal welfare and its implications in contemporary society.
