El Nevado

Peru is the main producer of alpaca fiber in the world. With 87% of the population of this species, the tradition of alpaqueros is sustained in high Andean communities throughout Peru and Bolivia.

However, the traditional practice of raising and producing alpaca fiber is beginning to be threatened by problems such as rural migration.

Many families of alpaqueros begin to migrate to large cities due to the lack of resources in their high Andean communities, and the work of raising them becomes more reduced over the years.

This story tells about Evelyn Diaz’s family and their work at the El Nevado Farm in Puno, the intimate bond that exists between this family and the alpacas and the tradition behind their work and the relationship with the environment in which both they and the alpacas live.
