A Beautiful Mind
“If you only have two years remaining in your life, how would you live?” This is a question for anyone diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). GBM is the most aggressive type of cancer that begins within the brain. The average survival time is only 18 months and only 20 percent of GBM patients survive more than one year. A mere 5 percent of patients survive more than five years. Jeanna Wong, a 24 year-old woman from Hong Kong, was diagnosed with GBM in September 2020 after being admitted to the hospital due to blurry vision. Since then she has undergone awake craniotomy, a type of surgery performed on the brain to remove parts of the tumors while the patient is awake and alert. She is now undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy to hopefully improve her condition.
As deadly as GBM can be, it is still relatively unknown to the wider public. Through Jeanna's story I hope to raise awareness about this widely-overlooked community, and to uncover not only their struggles, but also their hope along a highly daunting path.
